The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has introduced patrol boats to operate 24/7 along the Limpopo and Zambezi Rivers, aiming to strengthen border control and combat cross-border crime. The move modernises border surveillance and enhances rapid response capabilities in hard-to-monitor areas.
ZRP Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated the initiative curbs illegal immigration, smuggling, and transnational crime exploiting Zimbabwe's porous river boundaries. The patrol boats detect suspicious movements, intercept illegal crossings, and respond to incidents on waterways.
The initiative protects national sovereignty, safeguards border communities, and addresses concerns over smuggling networks and criminal activities undermining local economies. It's part of a broader effort to adopt a proactive, coordinated approach to policing, recognising border security extends beyond roads and land crossings.
While welcomed by some, others argue enforcement should be complemented by addressing socio-economic factors driving irregular migration and smuggling. Long-term success depends on regional cooperation, intelligence sharing, and development strategies reducing root causes of cross-border vulnerabilities.
The patrol boats symbolise Zimbabwe's intention to tighten control over boundary waters and reinforce security along critical river borders, deterring criminal activity and protecting territorial integrity
