From the dusty streets of Luveve in Bulawayo to the manicured fairways of Zimbabwe’s most prestigious golf courses, Lance Corporal Letwin Ncube’s journey is a remarkable story of resilience, discipline, and determination.
The Zimbabwe National Army golfer has emerged as one of the country’s most accomplished female golfers, proving that excellence is forged not only on the battlefield but also on the golf course.
Born on December 30, 1992, in a remote village in Nkayi District, Ncube attended Sidhulini Primary School before proceeding to Luveve High School in Bulawayo. Her passion for sport began long before she discovered golf. Growing up in Luveve High-Density Suburb, she was an energetic footballer who played for New Orleans Football Club, a grassroots women’s team in Bulawayo.
Her life took a defining turn in 2011 when she was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army at Imbizo Barracks, then known as Llewellin Barracks. After deployment to the 5.2 Infantry Battalion, she continued her football career with Black Rhinos Queens, the military women’s football team.
However, fate had another sporting destiny in store for her.
In 2014, after watching golf on television, Ncube became fascinated by the sport and decided to give it a try at Warren Hills Golf Club. What began as curiosity soon transformed into a passion.
“The television became my first training ground, and the golf course became my classroom,” she recalls.
Inspired by world-renowned American golfer Nelly Korda, Ncube immersed herself in learning every aspect of the game. She studied Korda’s techniques, admired her power off the tee, and sought to emulate her discipline and consistency.
With military discipline as her foundation, Ncube steadily developed her game and began representing Zimbabwe on international platforms.
Her golfing career has seen her compete at several World Military Games, representing the nation in Germany in 2018, China in 2019, the United States in 2023, and Zimbabwe in 2024 when Victoria Falls hosted the prestigious event. She was also part of preparations for the 2025 World Military Games in Kenya. Follow us on WhatsApp
Beyond military competitions, Ncube has proudly represented Zimbabwe in regional tournaments, including the 2019 Triangular Golf Tournament involving Zambia and Botswana. Locally, she has consistently excelled in major competitions at Bulawayo Country Club, participating in Club Championships and Champion of Champions tournaments.
Her hard work and dedication have translated into significant achievements.
Recently, she claimed the Zimbabwe Republic Police Ladies Championship title for the third time, cementing her status as one of the country’s leading female golfers. In 2024, she secured a bronze medal at the World Military Games in Victoria Falls and was crowned Champion of Champions at Bulawayo Country Club.
Despite her growing success, Ncube’s greatest challenge remains balancing the demands of military service, competitive sport, and family life.
She credits discipline, proper planning, and support from her military commanders for helping her manage multiple responsibilities. As a mother, soldier, and athlete, she approaches each day with purpose and structure.
“Golf has given me balance,” she says. “It helps me regulate my emotions, stay focused, and maintain inner strength.”
Like many women in golf, Ncube has faced obstacles in a sport traditionally dominated by men. Limited sponsorship opportunities, less media exposure, and unequal prize structures continue to present challenges for female golfers seeking to grow their careers.
Yet she remains undeterred.
Instead, she has turned those challenges into motivation, using every setback as an opportunity to improve.
Today, Ncube’s message extends beyond the golf course. She has become an inspiration to young girls who dream of breaking barriers in sport.
She openly speaks about her own fears when she first entered golf and how the game taught her patience, confidence, and perseverance.
“Golf taught me that failure is not the end. You can fail many times before getting it right,” she says.
Her advice to aspiring golfers is simple but powerful: “Just start. Your only competition is yesterday’s you.”
As Lance Corporal Letwin Ncube continues her remarkable rise, her story stands as a testament to the power of determination, discipline, and self-belief. Every swing, every tournament, and every medal reflects a woman who refused to be limited by circumstances and chose instead to pursue excellence.
From grass to grace, her journey continues to inspire a new generation of athletes, proving that with courage and commitment, greatness can emerge from the most humble beginnings.
