The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has issued a stern warning to digital content creators, particularly Queen Nadia TV, over explicit content circulating on social media platforms. This move highlights the tension between traditional values and the digital age, where social media influencers like Queen Nadia have gained massive followings by pushing boundaries .
Queen Nadia TV, a popular Facebook page with over 3 million followers, has been at the center of the controversy. Her content, featuring brief flashes of nudity, has sparked intense debate and outrage among Zimbabweans. While some view her as a "brave" entrepreneur responding to a system that rewards controversy, others see her as a symbol of moral decay.
The BAZ has emphasized that all digital content consumed within Zimbabwe is subject to the country's legal and constitutional framework, regardless of the platform or location of the creator. The authority has warned that it will take enforcement action against creators who distribute explicit material accessible to children, citing the Broadcasting Services Act and the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act .
The controversy has sparked a national debate on public morality, with many criticizing Queen Nadia's content as indecent and harmful to children. Queen Nadia's mother has also issued a public apology, stating that she feels embarrassed and distressed by her daughter's actions.
Under Zimbabwe's Cyber and Data Protection Act, the distribution of "intimate images" without consent or in a manner that violates public decency carries heavy penalties, including significant prison time. The government has vowed to crack down on creators who breach these laws .
The Queen Nadia controversy highlights the need for stricter regulations and more robust enforcement of decency laws on social media platforms. As one social media user noted, "Australia, Britain, and UAE have taken serious action to ban juveniles from accessing social media... we need to see the dangers in this"
