The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is investigating Kwekwe City Council over allegations that funds collected from vendors were misused. Kwekwe Mayor Albert Zinhanga informed a full council meeting last Tuesday that ZACC is already handling the matter and has possession of an audit report compiled by the council regarding the alleged theft of vendor funds.
"We cannot discuss it now. We are waiting for ZACC to finish their investigation so that we can get feedback on the issue," Zinhanga said in response to a question from Ward 10 Councillor Solomon Matsa, who had requested a copy of the audit report.
The audit was initiated after Matsa raised concerns in August that thousands of dollars collected from vendors were being embezzled by council management, prompting calls for a formal investigation. Matsa claimed that his own inquiries suggested the council collects between $100,000 and $150,000 from vendors monthly, but only about $4,000 reportedly reaches the council's coffers.
