High-level negotiations between the US and Iran have collapsed in Islamabad, highlighting deep divisions between the two nations despite 21 hours of intense talks. US Vice President JD Vance announced that Tehran rejected Washington's proposed terms, particularly regarding its nuclear program.
"The outcome is disappointing," Vance said, adding that the failure to reach an agreement would have greater consequences for Iran than the US. The US is seeking a clear commitment from Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions .
Iranian officials downplayed expectations of an immediate deal, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei saying it was unrealistic to anticipate a comprehensive agreement in a single round of talks. The talks were facilitated by Pakistan, which urged both sides to maintain dialogue and uphold the fragile ceasefire.
The negotiations were set against the backdrop of a broader conflict that erupted on February 28, with the US and Israel launching military operations against Iran, triggering retaliatory strikes. The escalation has resulted in over 2,000 reported casualties and widespread damage.
