EcoCash users in Zimbabwe are required to verify their mobile money accounts against the national ID database by June 2026, as mandated by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ). Failure to comply may result in account suspension. According to RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu, the verification process aims to eliminate fraudulent accounts and bolster security in Zimbabwe's mobile money system, which has been plagued by SIM-swap fraud and identity theft.
To complete the verification process, users must present a National ID or passport at an EcoCash or Econet agent, allowing their details to be matched with the Registrar General's database.
The RBZ has also introduced new consumer protections, including the removal of balance inquiry fees and free transactions below US$5, to promote small digital payments and encourage the adoption of mobile money services
