A heroic rescue attempt ended in tragedy on Christmas Day in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe. Two people, a 5-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man, lost their lives in a drowning incident at Mzila Compound, Redcliffe.


According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the boy fell into a 2-meter-deep pit while trying to retrieve a plastic container he had been playing with. The man, who was nearby, attempted to rescue the child but tragically fell into the pit as well.

The ZRP reported: "Two people, a 5-year-old boy and a 31-year-old man, drowned in a pit at Mzila Compound, Redcliffe, Kwekwe, on December 25, 2025. The child was playing near the pit with an empty 2-litre plastic container, which was floating in the water. In an attempt to retrieve the container, the minor fell into the pit and drowned. A 31-year-old man who was nearby attempted to rescue the child but also fell into the pit and drowned."

The bodies were later retrieved and taken to Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
