Three traffic police officers from Murehwa appeared in court on Monday facing charges of criminal abuse of duty after being caught with US$975 in bribe money allegedly extorted from motorists. Prosper Muchangani (36), Shelton Masvande (34), and Mercy Makarimai were remanded in custody until Tuesday, when they are expected to apply for bail.
According to prosecutors, on December 21, 2025, detectives from the CID's Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU) monitored traffic officers at suspected bribery-prone checkpoints. At the Nyambirai Farm checkpoint along the Harare-Domboshava road, detectives observed Masvande stopping two commuter omnibuses. The drivers handed cash to Makarimai, who was holding the Z69 book used for fines. She allegedly passed the money to Muchangani without issuing receipts.
A search by detectives revealed that Muchangani had US$975 in his pockets. The Z69 book showed no record of fines issued, and the officers had not declared the money or logged their deployment
