Three teachers from Chikore High School are set to appear in court over allegations of assaulting a Form 4 student.
The educators, Milton Koroka (47), Trymore Fole (27) and Tinashe Makotore (34), were arrested after a video of the incident went viral.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrests on Thursday, saying the trio will be arraigned at Norton Magistrates’ Court on Friday. The ZRP said:
“Reference is made to the Chikore High School incident that went viral, where school teachers, Milton Koroka (47), Trymore Fole (27) and Tinashe Makotore(34) allegedly assaulted a Form 4 student.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the suspects will appear in court tomorrow in Norton to face assault charges.”
Corporal punishment, which involves the use of physical force intended to cause pain or discomfort, is no longer legal as a disciplinary measure in Zimbabwean schools.
In 2017, the High Court ruled that corporal punishment of children, whether at school or at home, was unconstitutional.
The practice was found to violate children’s rights to dignity and protection from cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment under the Zimbabwean Constitution.
The ban was further reinforced through the Education Amendment Act of 2020, which explicitly prohibits any form of cruel, inhuman, or degrading punishment for pupils, effectively outlawing corporal punishment in schools. - Source: Current Affairs
