In a pivotal keynote address at the strategic planning workshop for Non-Formal Education (NFE) in Gweru, Chief Director of Primary, Secondary and Non-Formal Education, Mrs. O. Kaira, emphasized the critical need to revitalize NFE in Zimbabwe. Addressing a diverse audience, she outlined a comprehensive approach aimed at catering to school drop-outs and adults, ultimately unlocking the potential of every Zimbabwean.

Mrs. Kaira highlighted the importance of providing life skills and lifelong learning opportunities, alongside targeted training in key areas such as Agriculture, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Financial Skills, and Technical Vocational (TechVoc) education. She stressed the necessity of aligning NFE with the Heritage Based Education Curriculum Framework and linking it to the ambitious goals of Vision 2030.

“Once approved by the principals, this strategic plan will serve as a cornerstone for enhancing educational access and relevance,” Mrs. Kaira stated, underscoring the importance of monitoring and evaluating NFE programs to ensure their effectiveness.

As the workshop progresses, participants have shared valuable experiences and insights that could shape future policies and strategies within the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Professor Mahiya, chair of independent colleges, called for a re-definition of Non-Formal Education within the Education Act and the Ministry's policy framework. He argued that such a transformation is essential to meet the evolving challenges faced by independent colleges.

Professor Mahiya has been tasked with submitting his proposals to the government through the Ministry, advocating for a mandate that better aligns with contemporary educational needs.

As discussions continue, the focus remains on fostering an inclusive educational environment that empowers individuals through relevant and accessible learning opportunities.
