Mali authorities have arrested a self-proclaimed “witch doctor” accused of scamming citizens out of more than €33,000 by promising that his rituals would help the national football team beat Senegal and reach the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals. The man, known locally as a marabout named Mr. Sinayogo, allegedly convinced supporters that he had spiritual powers capable of influencing match results .

Reports say he used social media and word of mouth to collect donations, claiming the money would fund special ceremonies to guarantee Mali’s success. In total, he raised around €33,500. However, Mali lost 1–0 to Senegal in the quarter-finals, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring in the first half. Angry fans, feeling cheated, stormed the man’s home before police intervened to protect him and take him into custody .

He now faces charges of fraud, deception, and exploiting public belief in superstition. Authorities said the suspect remains under investigation, and prosecutors are expected to press charges for financial fraud and spreading false claims .
