Seventeen new magistrates were sworn in yesterday in Harare as the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) seeks to strengthen the country's courts. Chief Magistrate Vongai Guwuriro said the recruitment drive aims to increase the bench to 300 magistrates, up from the current 268.

The new magistrates will be deployed nationwide to help balance workload pressures and address case backlogs. Guwuriro said performance will be closely monitored, with each magistrate expected to complete at least 60 cases per month.

The intake includes five women, reflecting efforts to balance gender representation in the lower courts, where women currently dominate.
