Proposing marriage is traditionally when someone asks another person to marry them, often accompanied by romantic gestures or words. In Africa, couples often blend traditional customs, such as lobola (bride price) negotiations, with modern proposal ideas. Uganda, with its over 50 indigenous languages and a rich cultural mix, provides a unique perspective on marriage proposals. From the traditions of the Baganda kingdom to the vibrant dances of the Acholi people, Uganda's cultural diversity stands out.

In some Ugandan cultures, like that of the Baganda, kneeling is a sign of respect. However, it is not typically part of marriage proposals. With the rise of social media and the influence of Western cultures, many African traditions are being replaced or altered, raising concerns in countries like Uganda.

This issue sparked controversy when Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, stated on the "Africa is Home" Facebook page that "men who kneel to propose marriage should be arrested," describing the practice as "un-African" and foreign to Ugandan and African culture.

In his address, he emphasized that marriage proposals should reflect local customs and uphold cultural values. He further warned citizens against adopting practices he deemed inconsistent with Uganda's heritage.

One comment on the post drew attention to Uganda's strict stance on homosexuality in the past, noting that in the 1970s and 1980s, individuals suspected of same-sex relationships faced severe punishment, including crucifixion. This sparked wider discussions about how African cultural values are being eroded by the increasing influence of Western practices and ideologies.

Many Africans are now questioning whether future generations will have any knowledge of their cultural heritage. With African traditions being "washed away like dirty stains on clothes," it is up to Africans to preserve and fight for their lost culture
