On the 23rd of March 2026, His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the burial of three retired comrades at the National Heroes Acre, honouring their long and dedicated service to the country.

Major General (Retired) Herbert Chingono, Retired Commander Elson Mupamawonde—fondly known as "Soft Diet" during the liberation struggle—and Retired Commander Cosmas Chiringa were finally laid to rest at the National Shrine. Security forces, government officials, and citizens gathered to celebrate their lives and honour the sacrifices they made during the liberation struggle.

President Mnangagwa expressed his sincere gratitude, saying:

“The three heroes we are laying to rest at Heroes Acre were mentors.”

He further affirmed that their legacy and courage left an indelible mark, describing their contributions as “footprints of the war.” The President concluded by wishing them eternal peace.

May their souls rest in eternal peace.
