Kariba – A terrifying incident unfolded on November 3, 2025, at Kings Camp, Kariba, when a hippopotamus attacked a small fishing boat carrying two local fishermen, Luckmore Maliyanda and his friend Saddam. The attack occurred around 2:00 PM, shocking nearby residents and sparking calls for stronger safety measures in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the hippo charged at the boat, capsizing it and throwing both men into the water. Saddam managed to swim to safety, but Maliyanda was attacked and bitten on the arm and shoulder. He was dragged underwater several times before resurfacing.

Displaying incredible bravery, Saddam swam back to rescue his friend and pulled him out of the water despite the hippo still lurking nearby. Residents immediately alerted ZimParks officials, who quickly responded and arranged for Maliyanda to be transported to Siakobvu Hospital.

Maliyanda survived the attack and is currently hospitalised, where he is receiving medical treatment and reported to be in stable condition.

This marks the second hippo-related incident in the area within days, after another group narrowly escaped an attack while gathering vegetables. Local resident Blessing Mutale voiced concern over the growing threat posed by hippos, urging authorities to increase public awareness and implement preventive measures.

The community remains on high alert as investigations continue, and locals hope for more decisive action to ensure the safety of those living and working near water bodies.
