Bouchra Karboubi, Africa's top female referee, has announced her retirement after being snubbed for the 2025 AFCON officiating list, despite Morocco hosting the tournament.

Karboubi a trailblazer for women in African football, made history in January 2024 as the first North African and Arab woman to referee a men's AFCON match (Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria).

She also broke ground in 2020, becoming the first woman to officiate a top-division men's match in Morocco's professional championship.

Her exclusion from the 2025 AFCON list has sparked disappointment, with many praising her contributions to African football.

Karboubi's legacy as a pioneering referee will be remembered
