The government has strongly condemned acts of extreme corporal punishment against children following the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing a young girl being beaten while inside a sack in Guruve. The incident has sparked national outrage and renewed concern over the widespread use of violent disciplinary methods on children in Zimbabwe .

According to official records, nearly two out of every three children in Zimbabwe experience some form of violent discipline. One in three girls under the age of 18 reportedly experience sexual violence, often leading to teen pregnancy and early marriage. A UNICEF report reveals that 76% of males and 64% of females experience physical violence before the age of 18, including kicking and assaults with objects that result in injuries such as bruises and broken bones .   Follow & Share Our WhatsApp Channel

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Simon Masanga, said violence against children is unacceptable under any circumstances. "Discipline must never take the form of physical or emotional harm. Children, even when they may be perceived as naughty, deserve guidance, care and constructive correction rooted in dignity and respect," Masanga said .

The Ministry is working closely with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to investigate the matter and ensure accountability, while also providing psycho-social support to the affected child to help her recover from the trauma. Masanga urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to adopt positive parenting approaches that promote trust, resilience, and healthy development, warning that violence only perpetuates trauma and undermines the wellbeing of children .

The Ministry urges citizens to report any cases of child abuse immediately to the nearest Social Welfare Office or Police Station. This call comes after the arrest of Justin Changa, 55, and his alleged accomplice, Blessed Changa, 28, in connection with the incident .
