In a candid statement, FC Porto President André Villas-Boas criticized Saudi club Al-Ittihad for their conduct during transfer negotiations for midfielder Rodrigo Mora. Villas-Boas revealed that FC Porto received an initial offer of €50 million, far below their minimum asking price of €70 million, and that a promised €63 million bid from Al-Ittihad never materialized.
“The club unfortunately has gotten used to trying to play games with FC Porto,” Villas-Boas said, expressing frustration over what he described as a lack of seriousness from Al-Ittihad. After discussions with Mora himself, Porto was firm on the €70 million valuation, but the Saudis ultimately disappeared from the negotiation table.
The Porto President also questioned the ethics of Al-Ittihad’s approach, accusing them of “messing with a kid’s head and his agent,” which he described as borderline unethical under UEFA transfer regulations. However, Villas-Boas hinted at a potential thaw in relations with Al-Ittihad following the recent appointment of Portuguese coach Sérgio Conceição at the Saudi club, suggesting the future could hold a more respectful partnership.
This episode highlights the complexities and challenges of high-profile football transfers, with Porto standing firm in their valuation while navigating the intricate dynamics of international negotiations.
