A man arrested with crystal meth at the busy Copa Cabana bus terminus has been jailed for nine months, in a case that underscores Zimbabwe's escalating drug crisis. Shingirai Sikona Makamu was caught on August 22 after police, acting on a tip-off, searched him and found two sachets of crystal meth concealed in his right trouser pocket. The arrest took place during peak hours at the crowded terminus, a hotspot increasingly linked to drug trafficking. https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaJBte43bbV50PSJqU20
The Harare Magistrates Court sentenced Makamu to 12 months in prison, but three months were suspended on condition of good behavior, leaving him to serve nine months behind bars. He has since been remanded in custody pending further court processes. https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VaJBte43bbV50PSJqU20
Anti-drug groups say the case is a reflection of a spiraling national problem. In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the conviction "shows how deeply drugs have infiltrated our communities and how urgently decisive action is needed to protect young people."
