Brigadier-General Mathias Tizirai Ngarava, a decorated liberation war veteran and national hero, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, at the age of 66. Acting President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga described Ngarava as a disciplined soldier, distinguished patriot, and dedicated revolutionary whose life was defined by sacrifice and unwavering service to Zimbabwe .


Ngarava was born on March 27, 1959, in Chivi District, Masvingo Province. He left school in 1976 to join the liberation struggle, undergoing military training in Syria and operating in Gaza Province, Sector Four, until independence in 1980. After independence, he integrated into the Zimbabwe National Army, rising through the ranks to become a Brigadier General in 2023 before retiring in March 2024 .  Follow & Share Our WhatsApp Channel

Ngarava's military career was marked by discipline, patriotism, and dedication. He participated in peace campaigns in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo, demonstrating his commitment to regional stability. His exemplary service earned him numerous awards and recognition.

In recognition of his immense contribution to Zimbabwe's liberation and development, President Emmerson Mnangagwa conferred National Hero status on Brigadier-General Ngarava. The announcement was made by Information Minister Jenfan Muswere at Ngarava's home in Chinhoyi .

Ngarava's legacy extends beyond his military rank, touching the hearts of those he lived amongst in Harare. His disciplined approach, patriotism, and dedication to Zimbabwe's development serve as an inspiration to future generations .
