A massive eruption from the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia's Afar region shocked locals on Sunday, marking its first eruption in over 12,000 years. Residents described it as feeling "like a bomb," with thick ash blanketing villages near Afdera.
While no lives or livestock were lost, ash clouds spread as far as the Red Sea, Yemen, Oman, and India, disrupting air travel. Airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and KLM cancelled flights as a precaution. Indian authorities reported that ash reached 15km into the sky, potentially affecting satellite signals and flights.
Experts say the full extent of the contamination is unknown due to the suddenness of the eruption, and the ash may linger in the atmosphere for days.
