Moroccan courts have charged 18 Senegalese supporters with crowd disorder during the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat. The defendants are being tried in custody, and their case was postponed to January 29 to allow time for defense preparation.
The accused were arrested on suspicion of involvement in disorder inside Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium during the final, which Senegal won 1-0. Reports indicate that some supporters threw objects onto the field, including stadium seats, prompting authorities to intervene.
The defense team claims the defendants are innocent and were unfairly arrested. One Algerian supporter, a French citizen, was also detained in connection with the incident. His lawyer argues that the supporter had no link to violence and was merely a sports management expert.
The incident occurred when around 1000 Senegalese fans attempted to enter the pitch area for nearly 15 minutes, prompting security forces to intervene. The crowd disturbances added to the tension on security services during a high-profile match.
The case will continue on January 29, with the prosecution seeking strict legal action against the defendants. The incident has raised concerns about crowd control and security measures at high-profile sporting events.
