Joy filled Plumtree Prison on Monday, 2 March, as 43 inmates were released following the 2026 Presidential Amnesty granted by President and Cabinet through the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. Forty males and three females were set free, making it the happiest moment in their lives.
According to Acting Officer-in-Charge of Plumtree Prison, Sezwe Dube, all the released inmates were from Plumtree and are local people living nearby. One inmate, travelling to Chipinge, insisted on going via Bulawayo to spend the night before proceeding.
Sharon Nyathi (20), the youngest and longest-serving female inmate, was sentenced to 33 months for theft in 2024. "I'm very happy to be selected," she said. "I learned how to plant trees and sew clothes in prison. I'm willing to do a course in needle knitting to make a living."
The skills learned in prison help former inmates desist from criminal activities and become better people in their societies.
